Over the past year, Linkin Park has been so successful that they recently wrote new music while traveling, something they haven't done much of in the past. On May 16, a deluxe edition of From Zero, the band's unexpected comeback album from the previous year, will be released, giving fans a chance to hear the results of their hard work.
"Up From the Bottom" and "Let You Fade," two of the three new bonus tracks on that special edition, were completed following the first sessions for the long-running rock band's first effort with new singer Emily Armstrong. The former was written in between tour dates, while the latter was completed following the album's release.
Jason Lipshutz, executive director of music at Billboard, questioned what it's like to maintain the 2.0 lineup's chart momentum with "Up From the Bottom" now released. The group announced their comeback in 2024, seven years after original singer Chester Bennington passed away in 2017. Armstrong chuckled, "A day in the life," while guitarist and singer Mike Shinoda hinted that his newest bandmate is already "super jaded" at this point. He stated on the video, which you can view in its entirety above, "She's just so used to it." “In the beginning, she was very grounded.”
According to Shinoda, LP composed "Up From the Bottom" near the end of the previous year, and although though it was the final new song they recorded for the deluxe edition, it was the one that was wrapped up the fastest. He remarked, "It's kind of fun having that shorter momentum," adding that the band is usually "so meticulous" that turning something around so fast was refreshing.
The new song "Unshatter," which Shinoda claimed LP started working on when they were first getting to know Armstrong, would also be included on the enlarged album.
In fact, she was so new that Shinoda claimed that new drummer Colin Brittain heard the screaming on the bridge from the control room when he started playing back Armstrong's wailing vocal on the song. He said, "Oh, you know who she sounds like? "The vocalist from Dead Sara," which is, of course, her true identity. "Really, dude?" he asked. She is extremely talented!
Shinoda warned fans not to expect more new songs this year because LP would be traveling for a large portion of 2025, even though Armstrong stated that they are considering adding a small recording studio to their tour bus. Speaking of which, Armstrong jokingly remarked, "I think we should play four hours," since their 27-song, two-hour runtime made it difficult to incorporate all of the fan favorites and deep tracks.
Shinoda claimed that having Armstrong front the band has given him some major cool dad points at home, possibly due to her no-holds-barred performance style or the adrenaline. My girls are saying, 'Whoa!' when they see Emily. "She is really awesome!" is a big boost. He remarked, "They say this all the time… they're like, 'Emily's so cool,'" while Armstrong took in the complimentary remarks. They believe she is the most awesome person on the planet. "Dad, you're not that cool," they say. She's awesome.
On Tuesday, May 6, the band will perform live at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
