As he establishes an Igbo learning center, Nigerian basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo claims his parents quarreled about which language to teach them.
Born to an Igbo mother and a Yoruba father, the athlete moved to Greece 35 years ago.
According to him, his last name was initially Adetokounbo, but the renowned "Antetokounmpo" came about since he had to spell it in Greek characters in order to obtain his visa.
He disclosed that they did not study any Nigerian language growing up since his mother did not want them to learn Yoruba and his father did not want them to learn Igbo.
However, his mother surreptitiously taught them how to count in Igbo and shared her heritage with them.
UGO, his name for the learning facility in Lagos, was opened by his foundation, CAFF and WhatsApp, in collaboration with the organization NABU.
