Speaking candidly, Giannis Antetokounmpo discusses his family's choice to share their journey from Nigeria to Greece and finally to Milwaukee with the world.
The 29-year-old NBA star Antetokounmpo, who is featured in the new documentary Giannis: The Marvelous Journey on Prime Video Sports, tells PEOPLE that his family decided to share his tale personally.
The film, which was directed by Kristen Lappas, features Giannis' mother Veronica Antetokounmpo, his siblings Thanasis, Kostas, and Alex Antetokounmpo, as well as his fiancée Mariah Riddlesprigger.
"I talked to my brothers, talked to my mom and Mariah, to see if we were okay and willing to share our story with the world, and we came to this decision as a family," he says.
Over his ascent to basketball success, Antetokounmpo claims that his life story has been "told by others" and includes his family's battles with racism, poverty, and citizenship as Nigerian immigrants in Greece.
However, Antetokounmpo and his family found it frustrating that some of his "darkest moments" were recounted secondhand. As a result, they chose to include vulnerable moments in the documentary on Prime Video Sports, such as the passing of his father, Charles Antetokounmpo, and the times when his brothers lived "in fear" as immigrants.
"There's been a lot of people that have shared their version of our story, but we felt like this was our time to open up about our dad, our foundation, our journey and do it in our way."
"It was time for us to go out there and share this our way," the Bucks star continues. One thing that makes me quite happy is that it's our way.
Apart from reclaiming his life story, Antetokounmpo declares that he is "going to be proud to show my kids this film so they can see our story." Along with their daughter Eva Brooke, who was born in September 2023, he and Riddlesprigger have three children together: two-year-old Maverick Shai and three-year-old Liam.
