The Liverpool forward played a key role in helping the West African nation win its first continental title.
Abdoulaye Diop, mayor of the Senegalese province of Sedhiou, revealed plans to name the city’s new stadium after Liverpool star Sadio Mane to honor his 2021 Africa Cup of Nations success.
The 29-year-old scored the winning penalty to help Senegal beat Egypt 4-2 in a shootout after a goalless extra time, securing their first-ever Afcon championship.

Mane’s Afcon win capped his journey as a native of Sedhiou, a region in Senegal’s southwest, where he also won major trophies with Liverpool—such as the Fifa Club World Cup, Uefa Super Cup, Champions League, and the Premier League.
“Sadio Mane has brought honor to all of Senegal, the Sedhiou region, and the Casamance area,” Diop told Sports News Africa. “So, I’ve decided to name Sedhiou Stadium after him.”
“This is a way to show appreciation from all the people of the region to him.”
